Fishing Course for Youth

Friday June 20, 2003
Des McLean tells us about "a course we are running in Mandurah a city of 50000 residents 80 km south of Perth WA that's Western AUSTRALIA Our course is for street kids who are referred to us by our local police. The course teaches the kids to actally catch a fish. We teach them to tie knots to secure hooks and terminal tackle, a bit about boat handling and associated subjects such as weather, tides, rope tying, maintenance etc."

"The main thing is to make it interesting and always exciting to them. we are almost at the end of our pilot courseof 6 weeks and last week culminated in a trip on our local Charter fishing vessel 50ft AQUALIB with astounding results including 4, 18kg WA dhufish (a type of ocean perch) The boys are responding well to our grandfather approach and we are hoping to send 8 of the 12 who started to technical college later in the year to study Maritime subjects with the intention of getting employment in the marine industry".
