Bass Tackle for Red Snapper

Thursday November 1, 2007
Photo © Ron BrooksThis is going to be one of those stories that people will say, "Yeah, right...", and will accuse me of "creative" story telling. They can do that if they like; it's their prerogative. But what happened to us on this trip has probably happened in one form or another to other anglers, and they got about as much grief from other anglers as I did.

Warning about Penn gear!!! I bought a Penn rod & reel combo a little over a year ago and it light use. The rod broke while casting - no reason, it just snapped straight accross the blank about 1/3 of the way up from the butt. I faxed Penn about repair or replacement and they told me it wasn’t a Penn rod, call Master Tackle. Just washed their hands of it even though it had the Penn name on it. I wouldn’t buy another Penn product after the way they responded; I always had high regard for Penn before this experience.

Year in and year out for over thirty years I have used Penn 4/0 reels with no problems. They take a real beating and still work extremely well for me. I am amazed at your problem. What model reel and rod were you using?

Sounds like one of the super cheapy combo’s. Master Tackle, yeah probably.
Beat up at the store by a 17 year old stock boy, and then possibly mishandled by the owner. Leads to broken rods. I doubt your the only one because you cannot satisfy everyone. If you paid $250 for the rod it would be another story.
