Mr. Brooks I enjoy reading your column. Why? You write about fish species that end up here during the spring and summer, for example bluefish and striped bass. Unfortunately no red drum, once in a blue moon a black drum on the Long Island waters. You could keep tabs about Long Island surf fishing on my hobby website http://www.jonesbeachfishing.com.

Dear Mr. Brooks I am a big angler enthusiast myself and I am always looking for new angler websites to post pictures of my catch. I’ve recently came across a new start up called Bragoff.com which seems to appeal to angler enthusiasts. Basically the users can upload different photos of fish thay’ve caught and brag about it. The site has a community element and a great potential.

Thank you,

Dear Mr. Brooks,
Every year i go down to an island off hilton head to spend some time with the kids. One day out of the kids bordeom i bought three cheap $29.00 rod and reel combos at walmart.(shore fishing) My first day I hooked a 4-5 ft black tip shark. Now, I am hooked….But so confused as to proper equipment to buy. Could you recommmend some nice intermediate surf fishing rod and reel set-ups that accept braided line? thank you,
josh

July 7, 2007 at 8:03 am
(21) saltfishing says:

Josh,

Any reel will accept braided line – just wondering why you specify braid. Monofilament will get you more bites. Go back to Wal-Mart. They have several reasonably priced outfits that will fill your needs. Buying a more expensive outfit for the short amount of time you will be fishing does not make sense. Look for a rod that is 8 or 9 feet in length and has a medium to large spinning reel. They have them already set up as combos – some even have the line already io them.

August 19, 2007 at 3:23 pm
(22) Rich says:

Good advice. When my hobby became serious I learned to switch to braid line with fluorocarbon leader. I don’t lose fish anymore. Period. ANGLERSYSTEMS carries some of the new reels on the market that are specifically designed for braid line. Thanks!

(28) saltfishing says:

I try to date items that may be time specific. There may be some articles in the archives that do not have a date – and I will search for them. But, in general, articles that are instructive, etc. are not dated. They may refer to a season, but that should be evident in the article. I’ll impart a date when it is relative from here on. Thanks for the comment.

(31) ed jones says:

Yellowmouth trout, the go too fish when nothing else is biting.First always use the light line and the smallest hook you can get away with,I use a number 1 kayle,1/4 oz egg sinker with a bead between the hook and the swivel, and then tie a leader to the swivel,i use twenty lb about a foot long.then get a peiece line and tie above your swivel about 20 inches, use a blood knot for this hook.also make this leader about the same lenght as your other leader.Save a couple of your small shiny fish and fillet the side off and then cut strips down the fillet about the lenght of the fillet, hook the fillet only in the top and let dangle ,If you upsize the strip you will get bigger fish.Fish straight down or cast out.You can get multiple fish on one piece of bait.Yellowmouth trout don t freeze well but are great that night or the next morning for breakfast. This set up elemnates the need for exspensive leaders and will get just about any fish out their too bite.Always wet your knot before pulling tight.Fishing for reds and trout when not useing a float all you need is a simple lead head jig and it does not seem to matter what color just use the better ones because a big red will straighten out those others.TBS Jigs work very well. And remember too frenquly retie your hook and check your line for frayed spots.also when you are on a spot throw a few small pieces of shrimp in the spot you are fishin and that will sometimes make the bite a lot better.[places to get fish] Look for birds that are feeding not just sitting around pruning their feathers,And when you spray off on make darn sure that you dont get any on your line or spray over your bait because just when you do the fishin is over ,or at least the catchin.Yellowmouth can be found at the edges of the creeks and sometime in the creeks but normaly they stay in deeper holes where the bottom has little bumps in it.When the fish really have lockjaw try this, put a slit shot and just a number one kayle on your line and throw a piece of live shrimp out and slowly pull it back towards you.And remember to take a kid fishing ,it will keep them out of trouble.Hopes this helps someone see their kids smile and i know the guides will be upset with me for telling there tricks.Tight lines to all

Getting ready for the spring summer season, Kings will be in the Kasilof and Kenai in May, Then in July I have King Salmon spawn in Crooked Creek in front of my house here in Kasilof Alaska, We fly fish trout not 100 feet from the house. My favorite is fishing the Gulf of Alaska late August early September when those athletic Silvers can be seen in the clear water and puffins come flying over the boat, then you get a Yellow Eye and all is right with the world when you get home and put soe on the grill!

(68) Fishing Tip says:

use these 3 fishing tips too.1. Fish face upstream. If you are behind them, you can catch them directly in front of you.2. If you can see to the bottom of the creek, they can see you! Approaching a creek or stream from the bank often spooks fish.3. It is much easier to cast to a pocket, pool or small riffle from the center of a stream and maintain a slow retrieve. Best of all you are in an ideal position to cast effectively towards either bank.
