East Coast King Mackerel

Sky rockets! This time of year up and down the Gulf and East Coast, it is not unusual to see king mackerel, or kingfish (scomberomorous cavalla), leaping high into the air for no apparent reason. According to biologists, this has something to do with their mating ritual. But leap they do, often straight up and as high as eight to ten feet in the air. It is quite an awesome sight!
