US to Terminate LORAN C in 2010?
We now find our from the International LORAN Association (ILA) that the new US budget for 2010 calls for the termination of LORAN C. Many anglers still utilize LORAN C and it is the backbone on which eLORAN will be built.
If you use LORAN C and want to see the entire LORAN system upgraded to be a backup for GPS, you need to contact your political representatives and voice your opinion. Don’t let a lack of your involvement allow the system to be taken down!

Having another alternate way to navigate in event loss of signal on other methods or electronics going bazerk…I would favor keeping the Loran C as part of the package. GPS was anticipated to replace and it was favored I believe due to the maintenance costs involved with antenna sites for the Loran. Can we make bettr use of all those cellphone towers now? I could comment more later.
You need to up date your web site. P.L. 111-83 was signed into law Oct. 28 2010 allowing DHS to shut down LORAN-C by January 4th 2010. If the Commandant signs off so will the Secretary of DHS. The bottom line is money. This year is the perfect storm for axing LORAN. The President wants to cut the budget by eliminating “old programs”. This opened the door far and wide for the CG to rid themselves once and for all. If you want to keep those receivers functioning you need to get the word out far and wide. Small air plane owners and some larger aircraft, ship rec. divers and business of such, fishing industry, some telecommunications. Spread the word. The signal was turned off in Europe some years ago. However when that signal went off air, the governments in Europe caught a lot of flak becuase the users of that signal called and wrote there representatives soon after that signal was turn back on. Don’t let this slip by, Jan. 4th 2010 is fast approaching!!!
It can only be a GPS backup if users can buy LORAN equipment. You need to go on eBay to find, at best, a used receiver. Consequently, LORAN does not have a growing user base and remains popular only with legacy users.
I am investigating the purchase of a used loran C to convert some important gps coordinates that I have. I am not toing to buy a loran C unit if it is going to be terminated 2010.
What is the latest update on this.
