Watch That Wake

Friday September 11, 2009

Sometimes we fail to pay attention to things going on around us when we fish. Wakes from a passing yacht can and will cause damage to you and your boat. It almost happened to me in the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).

Ron,
You should try that in a kayak. I’ve been fishing out of a kayak for a couple of years now and deal with this all the time. Some will slow when they approach but often times they don’t.
I keep my anchor on a quick release for such an occurrence. I also have an air horn that I don’t mind using. What’s wrong with these people?

Since it is the law I am amazed that their is no enforcement or recourse. I live on the ICW in Dade County and can’t even leave my 21 footer tied up to the dock overnight for fear it will be destroyed by ignorant operators and their wakes. By the way, my dock is in a no wake zone!
