New South Atlantic Fishing Regulations
The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council (SAFMC)recently and quietly published Amendment 16 in the Federal Register. With little fanfare (for obvious reasons) they placed new rules on bottom fishing fro grouper and other species that will go into effect on July 29, 2009, from North Carolina through the Florida Keys.

Every spring actually late winter and early spring, the black drum make their way into the inlets up and down the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. This is the time of year that the big breeder fish come in to spawn. Black drum fishing enthusiasts make plans months ahead of time, tuning up their tackle, and their boats. Although the average big drum catch is around 40 pounds, these fish can reach weights over 100 pounds, and annually many fish that size are caught.
Calcutta Jewfish - Goliath grouper
We caught our share of Jewfish (Goliath Grouper) over the years. The first was 80lbs in 1959. The heaviest was 347lbs. The last one was 40lbs. The ones in between those years are what my memories are made of. Most of the small to medium size fish we caught were caught in the rivers and creeks. The most memorable ones were not the big ones; the most memorable ones were the ones we caught on cane poles in the creeks - Calcutta cane poles about 2 inches in diameter at the butt.
