Many states have instituted net bans or size restrictions on commercial fishermen. And, almost daily, state officials catch someone with illegal nets. States also have recreational size and bag limits, and almost daily, recreational anglers are stopped who have violated the rules. Each side points fingers at the other, and the debate rages on.
Is there a solution?
As the debate continues, several things need to be remembered. Our fish stocks are dwindling in some states because of poor or no regulations. The commercial harvest absolutely has to continue in some form to put seafood on the tables and in the restaurants. And, if both sides want to continue fishing, compromise has to be the major agenda item. Fighting for the right to fish will be a wasted effort on both sides if the fish disappear.
The commercial people have a valid argument. Their feelings that someone elses fun will take away their livelihood are real and they intend to fight for that livelihood. Recreational anglers also have a valid argument. They want the freedom to put fish on their own table.
The solution is and has to continue to be compromise. As a recreational angler, I certainly want to continue fishing and being able to bring home some supper. I also dont want to affect the well being of an entire community by pushing to eliminate commercial fishing.
We have to work together toward a solution. Wouldn't it be nice to be on the water and wave to a commercial man pulling his traps and actually have him wave back!! Maybe one day we will be there.
