Fishing Rights Bill

Your right to fish may hang in the balance

By , About.com Guide

I opened my mail today and found another plea from my CCA (Coastal Conservation Association) chapter. Most non-profit organizations exist on the contributions of members. CCA is no exception. I always renew my membership and send them some money when an issue arises that needs funding.

The letter today has me worried. CCA National President David Cummins paints a picture that really has me concerned. He talks about MPA’s and the efforts or organized groups to have them instituted across the national seashore.

I have been aware of the “anti’s” for a number of years. In the past, their efforts always seemed to be the protest variety – protests that got them publicity, but made them look like the fools they are. In the past year or two, however, I haven't seen or heard much from them in the public eye. Neither have you, and there is a reason. They have been playing it smart and working the inside through lobbying and endorsing political campaigns.

Rather than take the high road, they have chosen to seek refuge and support among other organizations, pooling their resources and clout. The letter I received today is a real wake-up call not just for me but also for each one of you out there reading this.

The possibility that we will loose the right to fish is more real today than it has ever been. “No fish zones” and “MPA’s (Marine Protected Areas) are being pushed to the front burner, and things are happening fast. California has already lost 20% of their Channel Islands permanently to a no fishing zone.

The liberal left wing news media is no help. David tells us that in a recent New York Times editorial, the writer indicated that President Bush could do the right thing and enlighten the world by extending California’s actions to all states. As President Cummins says, “Give me a break!”

What can you and I do to help save our fishing? First of all call and write your congressmen and tell them you support the bipartisan “Right to Fish” bill currently pending before congress.

Second, get involved! Join an organization that supports responsible fishing and work with them in the fight. CCA happens to be the one I belong to and I would recommend you joining as well.

I’m writing a check as soon as I finish this – a check that I know will help CCA in our battle. Time is running out. If you don’t act now through your elected officials and/or through tax-deductible contributions to groups like CCA, the fight will be over before it even begins. I’m asking each of you – no, I’m begging each of you to get involved!
