Green Head Heaven

Male seabass are on the prowl!

By Ron Brooks, About.com

In January days to get offshore are fewer are farther between because of the northeast wind flow. But when a good day comes along, you would be wise to take advantage of it. Cooler water temperatures off the southern states turn fish on and some great catches are being made on these good weather days.

Sea bass – the big green head males specifically – make their way in to closer reefs during this time. Big breeders males weighing five pounds or more are common right now. These tasty fish will eat almost any bait and that makes it easier on everyone. Frozen squid usually does the trick, and double hooked fish finder rigs or chicken rigs as some people call them will catch two fish at a time.

The close in artificial reefs and wrecks off North Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas are yielding huge catches of green heads to party boats and private boats alike. Mixed in are some legal red snapper and a stray grouper or two just to make it exciting.

On these good weather days when the seas have calmed from the normal winter wind, its time to head for green head heaven and catch a box full of fish!
