You may know from my bio page that I am a member of a number of writers' organizations, including being a Board Member of the Georgia Outdoor Writers' Association (GOWA).

Our GOWA spring conference and awards banquet was held this past weekend in Augusta, Georgia, and even though the conference was away from saltwater, it included some dynamite turkey hunting. I thought you might like to see some of the pictures.

Jimmy Jacobs scored on a nice bass from the fishing pond at the National Wild Turkey Federation headquarters in Edgefield, South Carolina. We were treated to a tour of the facility there, some fishing in their private pond, and several rounds of clay pigeon shooting.
Tim Earl, President of GOWA for 2001, had a once in a lifetime event. He took two trophy-class wild turkeys with one shot. Hunting on private land, he called them in, along with a hen that walked right up and stared at him for a long time. When he fired on the turkey he wanted, the second turkey had managed to walk behind the first, and both went down. When I came upon Tim cleaning his birds at the McDuffie fish hatchery station, it was three hours later and he was still shaking! Needless to say, we heard about the turkeys all weekend long!

We all had a great time fellowshipping and talking about the past year. Yours truly even won first place in the Electronic Media category for best article of the year. The article was "Two Friends and One Huge Fish" if you would like to read it.
I never realized until I joined some of these writers organizations what comradery and friendship there can be among people of different backgrounds but similar interests. I would recommend to anyone who pursues a hobby or career that they join an organization that supports their particular interest. The benefits are outstanding!
