Owning a boat, maybe for the first time, and deciding to head offshore, maybe for the first time, a number of readers ask about getting into dolphin fishing. That’s dolphin fish, mahi mahi, not dolphin porpoise! I have answered some specifics, but now it is time to lay out some basics on fishing for these prolific, blue water acrobats.
Nothing can be quite as exciting as watching a bull dolphin streaking through the air headed at a right angle for your trolling spread! And nothing can cause quite as much shear panic and confusion as when several of these big bulls all hit at the same time!
Next time you head out, be aware of what is going on in the water. Baitfish attract predator fish, and there is no reason I can think of for not fishing the area around a big baitfish school.
