I Receive Quite a Lot of Mail from Readers Every Day

By Ron Brooks, About.com

I receive quite a lot of mail from readers every day. Some ask questions; some offer suggestions; and, some just tell me about their fishing experiences. I thought I would let all of you see some of the commentary and ideas I get. Maybe they will help; for sure some of them will entertain.
  • Unnamed for security reason, a member of the U.S. Air Force stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba writes:
"I am in the Air Force. I am currently deployed to Guantanamo Bay Cuba. Since my 4 month stay here I have done a lot of fishing hear in the bay. One of the big ways of catching fish here is to hook a bait fish, like mullet or a yellow tail, even herring right through the mouth, and then run a treble hook back to the tail. We then will set out 2 or 3 lines and troll around the bay or even in the GITMO river. This has been a pretty successful tactic for snook, and tarpon. We even have caught quite a few Jacks this way... Well back to the mission and then fishin.."

Not many of us get to fish in that particular area!

  • Jamie writes from Louisiana:
" My son and I fish from a very small boat. We don't go far, but we don't have to. Last week we caught ten redfish in one hour and then moved and caught ten trout."
I should be so lucky to catch that many fish in two hours!

  • From a guide in Louisiana:
"I am a fishing guide in South Louisiana who accidentally ran into your page on rod building. I run three bay boats and stick guides back on Falcons with kite string and five minute epoxy while changing baits in the boat for customers. I wish I had the time to really learn to do a fine custom rod - never had one to my name - just so one of the trout could come in my boat in style. Guess I will just have to dream that someday a fancy wrap will ride in my boat. Glad I ran into your page - someday --- Gon Fishn"

  • Many guides write to provide me their fishing reports. I want them to be posted on our forum for everyone to be able to read, but so far only a few guides have chosen to do that.

  • Many of you ask specific lure, bait or location questions. I mean MANY of you! I get more e-mail of this type than any other. I try to answer all of them as quickly as I can, but sometimes they are more than can be handled. I really want some of those questions to go on the forum as well. That would allow other anglers a chance to comment or answer. Believe it or not - I don't have all the answers!!

  • And finally, there are a number of features I have done that garner a lot of comments. A few of them are listed and linked below. Maybe you will find them interesting as well:
    One Old Man
    Cleaning Flounder
    Finger Lickin' Yellowtail

  • In any case, all of my work is designed to help you find and catch more fish, and to have fun doing it. I hope that through it all I have helped you in some small way.
