Rough Fish in Maine?

Often our own upbringing sets the standard for our lives!

By Ron Brooks, About.com

Dan Linden read my article, Redfish or Rough Fish and sent this note regarding an experience he had, albeit in freshwater:
I liked the last article quite a bit and thought I'd pass on this story.

I was fishing the Moosehead Lake region in Maine last spring working an area where a creek flowed into a nice bay. I tossed a big (size 8) stonefly upstream and hooked what turned out to be a five pound small mouth bass. It satisfied every story and legend that old Charlie Waterman ever told me about Maine Bronzebacks. It jumped, dug, and used every trick it knew, but I finally lipped it and lifted it out of the water. My wife dutifully took the photo and as I unhooked it and prepared to let it go, an old Maine waterman shouted over to me to "Throw that $#%@ trash fish up on the shore for the minks.

It was the best fish I ever caught on a fly. I ate a couple of it's smaller cousins, too, and they were just fine as well. But, I don't understand. I guess maybe your Dad and this fellow must have talked at some time in the past. My Dad always told me not to eat catfish. What a world.".

I think this goes a long way to prove that our fishing preferences - heck our life preferences - are most often shaped by our parents. And this goes a whole lot further than fishing! How are you shaping the future of your kids in today's world?
