Guide Review - Mitchell 300X Spinning Reel

I had the opportunity to try one of the 300X reels out on some sheepshead. These fish are hard fighters and on eight pound test line, a five pound sheepshead puts up quite a fight. The drag system works extremely well, as witnessed by many long hard runs on these powerful fish.

I particularly liked the patented "Spool Concept" feature. This let me change line spools very quickly and without affecting the drag setting on the reel. Two spools came with the reel, allowing me the flexibility to use the reel for two different applications.

Overall the reel worked very well, and with the exception of a loosening reel handle knob, I had no problems. It's designed for freshwater, but will do very nicely for occasional light saltwater fishing.

I have been a Mitchell 300 fan for over 40 years. I have 2 Mitchell 300's that have never been used. It has always been known that the 300's had a bail spring problem-they would always break, but that was ok as long as you could buy bail springs. Once you couldn't get bail springs the reel was useless and I still contend it was the best reel ever made. Anyway, 2 years ago I bought a 300X. It was a good reel( I fish brook trout, rainbows, coho, and steelhead) but I always had trouble with the bail not clicking back where it should when taking in my initial 1st turns so I would have to manually flip the bail back-this is a pain and distraction from what you are doing when fishing for trout. I went back a month ago to one of my 300's and am happy with the results. I am not happy with the 300X however and would like to know more about the problem that I am having.
