Guide Picks - Top 5 Bait Casting Rods |
 |
 |
|
Bait casting rods are
perfect for top water plug action with comparatively heavy line.
Their shorter length and heavier backbone allow wrist action to make a
plug walk. The better rods will have a fast taper and comfortable
hand grip.

1) Shimano Calcutta CL-720XFA
Try the XFA (extra fast taper) for plugs, topwater and even some
jigging. They will work well also on the larger lures and
jigs. The MA (medium taper) does well on larger baits, and light
trolling for mahi-mahi, sails and small tuna. The MRA is the same
blank as the MA but with roller guides - advertised as the perfect light
tackle rod.

2) Penn
Power Graph PG-5966C
A standard in the industry for many years, Penn Power Graph rods perform
flawlessly. I have a number of Penn graphite rods that are over ten
years old and still performing well. These graphite composite rods
have the perfect taper - not too fast and not too slow - for great
fishing.

3) G.Loomis
SWR786C
From G.Loomis, "A powerful, 6'6" casting/jigging rod, the SWR786
fishes plastics as well as live bait around the rocks. It's an excellent
night time "breakwater" rod for big calico bass on boat docks or
seawalls. And it excels at jigging for bottom fish, especially ling cod or
halibut up North. Comes with a long handle for added leverage, with cork
grips and a trigger reel seat."

4) All
Star Classic WR2
All Star rods are the ones the pros use. Some would say its because
they sponsor them, but what pro would use a rod that won't hold up under
heavy fishing pressure. This particular model is an all around
favorite for baitcasting applications. A bit pricey, although some
would say you get what you pay for!

5) Berkley
Series One SOC 701M
Berkley makes a lot of fishing tackle, rods and equipment. This rod
from the company founded in the 1930's can fit your needs for light
baitcasting.
