K-Kat Striper Report

Captain Ken Dubman says the stripers are thick off New Jersey

By Ron Brooks, About.com

(Captain Ken Dubman from K-Kat Charters provided this up-to-date report on the striper action along the northeast coast)

We are in the thick of a typical full-blown May striped bass run in the Sandy Hook area. Most trips are doing very well, both morning and afternoon, with only occasional dips in the action here and there.

Bunker spoon trolling has been hot since May 12th, with this type of fishing accounting for our larger fish, up to 32 pounds. Bluefish have become a nuisance on the spoons, with some of them no larger than the spoon itself. Clamming has been excellent, and necessary to fill slot limits, although on many occasions, we catch and release 6 "'tweeners" (fish between 28" and 34") for every slot.

This new rule can be frustrating, but everyone still seems to be going home with plenty of meat. The fish are spread from the back of Raritan Bay out to the oceanfront, and we could fish any given spot from day to day. See you out there!
