Maptech's New PDA Interface

Now you can carry all your charts and maps with you!

By Ron Brooks, About.com

Maptech at www.Maptech.com has come out with a new item. For all of you with a PDA or Palm Pilot, you can now have your charts and maps loaded onto your device. I received an email announcing this offer so I am currently giving it a try.

The trial download actually gives you the entire program. It takes an unlock code to use the program more than the ten times on the trial, and you can get it online with your credit card.

The program actually works nicely, I originally thought my Palm screen would be too small for the map to mean anything, but the zoom feature takes care of that problem nicely.

It even has an interface for you GPS. So, if you have a small handheld GPS with no mapping, you can now combine it with your Palm and get full color NOAA charts and maps

The download to your Palm is a bit long, and you need an extra memory card, but the instructions take you right through the upload. The program works with any Palm OS4 or OS5 system, regardless of the make of your PDA.

I look at it this way – for $19.95 I can get worldwide maps and use my Garmin handheld with my PDA. I call it a poor man’s color mapping GPS! I’ll be using it over the next few weeks and month s and I’ll report back on my results!
