Tournament Update – Wednesday

Day one brings great weather and lots of available bait. Should be interesting!

By Ron Brooks, About.com

Thursday at 6:30am we will be moving by the check out boat on the first day of the two day Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament. Upwards of 1000 boats will be heading out from three inlets – St Mary’s River in Fernandina, Mayport on the St Johns River and St Augustine Inlet. It should prove to be a madhouse in all three locations.

My prediction is that the biggest kingfish will be caught within a mile of the beach somewhere between Fernandina and Flagler Beach (how’s that for narrowing down a likely fishing spot!).

It is important to weigh any fish over about ten pounds on the first day. It certainly won’t get you any big fish honors, but it will count toward the two-day aggregate prize. Lots of anglers fail to weigh a first day fish because they think it is too small, only to be disappointed when they catch a sizeable fish on the second day, and the two together would have put them in the aggregate money.

The weather has been outstanding – something I can’t say about the past three years. Huge, wicked thunderstorms hampered anglers and the weigh in efforts, and frankly put some anglers in a dangerous lightening situation. This year, it will be blue skies and perfect winds, if the weather guessers are right.

I’ll report tomorrow night (Thursday) on the success (or lack thereof!) of our efforts. Hopefully the news will be better than our VIP stand – zero fish in the boat! Stay tuned!
