Tournament Finals

A sweet finish and hope for the "little guys"!

By Ron Brooks, About.com

Our week ended without the big smoker we needed to win. However, the 2005 Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament with over 800 boats fishing ended on a sweet note for all involved. Our north running boat found some small fish, and our south running boat only managed two sharks. But everyone was all smiles when they saw the winning boat.

Bill Rew, his wife, and their two young grandchildren, fishing from a 17ft Carolina Skiff, caught and weighed a 48.95-pound fish to take top honors in the largest fish category. James (Bear) Croft, yesterday’s leader slipped to second place, and Shenan Foster moved up to third place on the Lucky Seven boat with a 44.4-pound fish.

The two-day aggregate title went to Richard Gieger on the Wave Buster with two fish weighing 69.85 pounds. Second place went to Michael Crosby on the No Excuse with 68.05 pounds and third went to Jerry Carter on the Reel Quick boat.

Bill Rew’s winning fish proves the point that literally anyone can win this event. That’s the reason that so many local anglers in smaller boats enter every year. These “little guys” that fish this tournament year after year are the heart and soul of the effort. In a tournament world of professionals fishing in 37-foot boats powered by three outboards capable of running 70 miles and hour, it is extremely gratifying to see a little guy win the big prize.

Speaking of big prize, Bill Rew takes home a new 25-foot Contender center console powered by twin Yamaha 200 outboards. I think Bill will definitely be ready for next year’s show! What about you?
