KEY WEST, Fla. (June 30, 2003)-- Thirty-two young anglers from around the nation will compete July 13-15 in the first Mercury Outboards/International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Junior Angler World Championship Tournament, a catch-and-release event in the pristine waters of the lower Florida Keys.

The youngsters, ages 5 to16, qualified by winning one of three dozen fishing tournaments in the U.S. and several other countries. Anglers 5 -10 will compete in the small fry division, while those aged 11-16 will compete in the junior division.

They are representing tournaments in Florida, Minnesota, New York, Maryland, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Mississippi and New Jersey.

Mercury is the official outboard motor of the IGFA and is a strong supporter of conservation.

Mike Myatt, marketing director of the IGFA, said the qualifying tournaments and the Mercury/IGFA Junior Angler World Championship aims to encourage youngsters under 17 to become involved in fishing and keep them interested in the sport. Fishing also promotes closer family relationships said Myatt.

Anglers will fish in pairs from the same boat each day for a variety of species.
