Here's What I Caught
25 Pound Yellowtail Off Catalina Island
Here's How and Where I Caught It
I caught the yellowtail on a fly lined sardine off Catalina island. Fly lining a sardine means using no weight and just a hook and a live sardine for bait. The hook size was a 1/0 hook and 15 pound test on a Daiwa SL 20 reel. It took over 30 minutes to land and almost spooled me twice. I would recommend 20 pound test or heavier as I was under gunned and was lucky to catch this fish.
I was fishing with Newport Landing Sportfishing in Newport Beach.

Advice
- Use a lively bait and only use it for one cast
- Need a good drag system or there is no chance at landing these fish
- use little to no weight during the summer and fall months.
- cast as far away from the boat as you can.
- When you feel a bite give them 3 seconds to take the bait
- Be patient you may lose a number of these fish before landing one.
- best months for yellowtail. June-Oct
